Madison Theatre Co. present James McLure's, Laundry And Bourbon and Lone Star, two, one act comedies performed as intended in tandem.
Directed by Rob Watt here lie two, fly-on-the-wall, small town, warm-hearted stories laced with the boozy, bittersweet, humour and banter.
Laundry And Bourbon the first of the comedies centers around Elizabeth, wife of Roy. Her inner strength and her quiet understanding of the turmoil that has beset her husband since his return from Vietnam sets a calm standard for the manic, mother of three, Hattie, who joins her old high-school friend for day-time TV, bourbon and cokes and gossip on the front porch of her home on most sunny afternoons. Until this afternoon, when, Amy Lee, the town's do-gooder (and Hattie's social arch-enemy) arrives with news of Roy's latest infidelity which only strengthens Elizabeth's spousal loyalties even more - much to the annoyance of Amy Lee.
Lone Star is set in the backyard of Maynard's local bar, 'Angel's' and we find Roy, (Elizabeth's husband and one-time local, heart-breakin' hero, newly returned from 'Nam), and his brother, Ray, a slower, dowdier version of himself, whose good heart and honest soul gradually brings Roy back to the reality of his new-found, slightly sobering, situation. Together they set about consuming a case of beer whilst Roy regales Ray with his military and amorous exploits. With the arrival of Cletis, the fatuous, newlywed son of the local hardware store owner, the underpinnings of Roy's world begin to collapse as it gradually becomes clear that Ray has grown a little too close to Elizabeth in Roy’s absence and horror of horrors, Cletis has taken up an affair of his own; with Roy’s cherished Thunderbird.
